Abstract:

The presentation will outline the process and learnings from the development of Victoria’s first Marine and Coastal Policy  prepared under the Marine and Coastal Act 2018.  This whole of Victorian government policy guides decision makers to meet the objectives and guiding principles of the Act.

The policy builds on the strengths of previous  Victorian Coastal Strategies and includes new and important policy directions:

–             recognising and respecting Traditional Owners’ rights, aspirations and knowledge;

–              improved guidance and direction on planning for climate change; and

–              a much-needed focus on the marine environment, including Victoria’s first marine spatial planning framework to manage new and competing uses in the marine environment.
