Coastal Hazard Management and Climate Adaptation at Coast to Coast Sponsors

Clarence City Council

Over the last 8-years Clarence-City-Council has been implementing a 3-staged adaptation-pathway involving “no-regrets”, “win-win” projects along with focussed adaptation for the highest-risk site at Lauderdale. This pathway has involved staging projects such as community consultation, new planning-scheme controls, stepped-beach access-ways, signage/fencing, sand biodiversity surveys, filling-in dune-low-points with beach-scrapped sand, photogrammetry, high-resolution aerial beach-monitoring, citizen-science and hazard-line refinement. Ratepayers have been consulted on shared fiscal responsibility for future adaptation-options such as sand pumping and groynes.

Kingborough Council is delighted to be a sponsor and participant in the Coast to Coast 2018 conference especially with its focus on Supporting Local Government – Coastal Hazard Management and Climate Adaptation.

The issue of planning for climate change and meaningful adaptation for our coastal areas is of critical importance to us. Kingborough has 336 kilometres of coastline and we have observed that infrastructure located along the coastline is becoming more and more susceptible to coastal erosion, storm surge and coincident flooding in estuarine areas.

The Coast to Coast event promises to provide a great opportunity to learn from others and share information targeted specifically at local government and our communities.

The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF) works to support decision makers throughout Australia as they prepare for and manage the risks of climate change and sea-level rise. We help to address the adaptation needs of decision makers and practitioners, especially in the coastal zone, as they deal with projected impacts such as more frequent and more intense heatwaves, increasing risk of flooding from rivers and the sea, and increasing coastal erosion. Based at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, NCCARF has a national focus across Australia to build resilience to climate change in government, NGOs and the private sector.
